Flute and Mouthorgan

Flutes have existed since prehistoric times. A fragment of a cave bear thigh bone containing two holes, discovered in Slovenia in 1995, is believed by some scientists to be part of a flute used by Neanderthals more than 43,000 years ago. Flutes were used by the Sumerians and Egyptians thousands of years ago. The first likely flute was called the “ch-ie” and emerged in China. The ancient Greeks used panpipes. The transverse flute was used in Greece and Etruria by the 2nd century b.c. and later appeared in India, China, and Japan.

The Mouthorgan or the Harmonica has a long history, beginning in China with an instrument called the Sheng. Matthias Hohner introuduced the harmonica to 19th century America, which really began the modern history of the harmonica.
